Created by two friends in 1995 as a joke, Talk Like a Pirate Day, on September 19, has become a beloved faux-holiday that lets everyone channel their inner Jack Sparrow.

You will embark on a 1-hour sailing, hosted by two entertainers- Captain Jean and Rainbow Pete. The pirates will entertain with stories and song, give out gold coins, treasure maps and generally cause mischief.

Dress like a pirate! Think pirate hats, striped shirts, and bandanas. But remember to wear something warm and suitable for being on the water. Footwear must be worn, eyepatches are recommended. To protect the vessels, sharp high heels and stilettos are not permitted.

Bring a raincoat! But in the event of a cancellation, a call will be made by 8am at the latest if the sailing is cancelled due to the weather. If this occurs, you will be contacted and refunded in full.

The entertainment is designed for kids aged 4-10, adults are required to supervise their children and all ages are welcome to join in the fun.

Yes, there are limited toilet facilities. We advise a pit stop before you depart though.

You are unable to purchase food on the boat however, you are welcome to bring your own food aboard, but the captain will allow no alcohol. You are also welcome to purchase food or beverages from our on-site café Koel and bring them sailing. You may not take any food or beverages into the galleries.

All pirates aged 14 and under must wear lifejackets provided by the museum. Life jackets are also provided for any adult who would prefer to wear one. 

The New Zealand Maritime Museum is located in the heart of Auckland's Viaduct Harbour on the corner of Quay and Hobson Streets. The Britomart Transport Centre is just 10 minutes' walk from the Museum, making it easy to get to from the bus or the train.

If you're planning on driving, the closest car parking is at the Downtown Car Park with access from Customs Street West. There is an overhead walkway that connects this car park to the pedestrian precinct outside the Museum. There is mobility parking in Downtown Car Park.

Arrive 30 mins before your sailing. Latecomers may miss the boat and will likely be put in irons.
