Smooth sailing for schools at the Maritime Museum 

While we encourage education groups to book a sailing on the Waitematā Harbour, some things are out of our control - like the wind. If a sailing is cancelled we will get in touch with the main booking contact to advise as soon as possible.

What you need to know

Car parking: Downtown Carpark is the closest public carpark.

School buses: Please use the bus loading zone on Lower Hobson Street. Please be aware of frequent road closures and traffic management in this area.

Van parking: Please use the Downtown Carpark, vehicle height clearance: 1.9m

Mobility parking: The closest accessible parking is located in the Downtown Carpark

  • 1:1 Early learning (0-5 years old) 
  • 1:5 Primary- intermediate (Year 1-8)
  • 1:10 Secondary (Year 9-13)

These ratios are required on-site at all times. 

Generally most groups arrive at 10am and depart by 2pm to suit bus bookings and traffic issues. Groups are welcomed by our Education or Bookings team, gathering in The Learning Space for the day's schedule, safety and orientation briefing, before starting their programme. 

 

Students are advised to bring a packed lunch to be eaten in the Learning Space or in the concourse area.

There is also a cafe on-site serving cabinet food.
Strictly no food or drink allowed in the Galleries. 

Programme costs per child range from $5 to $8. Adult caregivers and supervisors are free.

Please come prepared with sunhats, sunscreen and water for your students. 
A health and safety briefing will be given by our Educators on arrival. 
Adult to child ratios must be adhered to at all times.

There are two accessible toilets located on the lower level of the Museum.
Gallery doors are motion-activated for your convenience.
There is lift and ramp access to the second-floor galleries.  

The museum is a Ministry of Education-approved Enriching Local Curriculum (formerly LEOTC) provider.

We can also deliver our programmes from your classroom or venue of choice. This is a popular option for schools that aren't central to Auckland, early learning programmes and for groups that have dificulty travelling.
