Tia Taurooi Waara Nnara Katei: We strengthen, anchor and bind our canoes with our Kiribati culture and traditions. 

Come celebrate this island community and their connection to the ocean and navigation. Drop in throughout the day and enjoy traditional performances, sit down to weave with the Kiribati Mamas and listen to stories from Mwemwetaake Ataniberu, I-Kiribati knowledge-holder and story-sharer, and Kaimanga Tenanoa, son of Taratai’s captain.  

This event is part of the World of Cultures 2023 festival.

Schedule

  • 10:15am - 10:40am: Storytelling with Mwemwetaake, Kaimanga and the Kiribati Mamas
  • 10:40am - 11am: Taratai Aotearoa performance led by Teibaba Abera
  • 11am - 12pm: Weaving Workshop - Make a woven star, fish or bird to take home or hang near Taratai
  • 1pm - 1:30pm: Storytelling with Mwemwetaake, Kaimanga and the Kiribati Mamas
  • 1:30pm - 2:10pm: Taratai Aotearoa performance led by Teibaba Abera
  • 2:10pm - 3:30pm: Weaving Workshop - Make a woven star, fish or bird to take home or hang near Taratai

About the Kiribati Mamas

Kaetaeta Watson was born in 1946 at Eita village on the island of Tabiteuea in Kiribati and moved to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1973. Louisa Humphry was born in 1952 on the island of Kuria in Kiribati and moved to Aotearoa in 1973. Kaetaeta and Louisa are master artists who have exhibited throughout Aotearoa and abroad and are proactive in sharing their knowledge and expertise through workshops. They are cultural leaders advocating for the maintenance and transmission of their Kiribati cultural heritage. Their refined knowledge and expertise in all that they do as makers, creative activators and cultural movers and shakers was acknowledged by Creative New Zealand when they were awarded the Pacific Heritage Arts Award in 2019.
