Join Hawaiian elder Kumu Sabra Kauka and navigator Kapena Steve Solystik of the Keiki Waʻa Project for a unique family friendly Hawaiian experience at the Maritime Museum. Through cultural knowledge, hula dancing and song, and hands-on activities, they will share the wisdom of traditional Polynesian navigation and the values that guide Hawaiian life.

Learn about the Hawaiian Star Compass, a tool used by ancient voyagers to navigate vast ocean distances by observing celestial bodies. This compass, adapted by Nainoa Thompson from Mau Piailug’s Micronesian model, connects participants to a legacy of exploration, resilience, and environmental stewardship.

About the Keiki Wa'a Project

The Keiki Waʻa Project began on Kauaʻi and has since traveled the globe, sharing the story of Hōkūleʻa, the voyaging canoe that reignited pride in Hawaiian culture and inspired a global movement to live in harmony with our island Earth.

This is more than a workshop - it’s an invitation to rediscover ancestral knowledge, celebrate cultural survival, and inspire future generations.
