About Bill Laxon

The Maritime Museum's library was named after Bill Laxon, who authored and co-authored books detailing the histories of shipping companies and wrote many articles telling the stories behind individual ship names.

Bill was a founding member of the Auckland Maritime Society, the organisation that developed the proposal for the New Zealand Maritime Museum. He was responsible for the establishment of the Auckland Maritime Society's library within the Bill Laxon Maritime Library collection.

The library holds the Bill Laxon Archives, which include an alphabetised collection of over 200,000 index cards showing images and key facts about a range of vessels. You can see a small selection of these index cards in the museum's Online Collections.
