The Maritime Museum will host Taratai Aotearoa in commemoration of the anniversary of the liberation of Tarawa, Kiribati.

The morning will begin with a community gathering in the Hawaiki Gallery, including karakia and speeches around the Taratai baurua - a traditionally constructed voyaging canoe built in 1976 in the village of Taratai, Kiribati. The baurua holds deep cultural significance for the Taratai Aotearoa community, many of whom trace their heritage to this village.

This will be followed by traditional Kiribati dance performances in the museum’s plaza.

Visitors may join at any time as activities unfold, with proceedings expected to conclude around 11:30am, depending on the number of performances.
