Welcoming the Flotilla

Friday 25 October

12pm Tuia 250 Voyagnig Flotilla sails into Waitematā Harbour and birth in Maritime Museum marina. The public is invited to greet the vessels from the end of Princes Wharf.
2pm Powhiri for flotilla crews. Eastern Viaduct Carpark. All public welcome

MARITIME MUSEUM:

Get up close to the Tuia 250 Flotilla vessels – learn about Pacific voyaging, navigation techniques and histories with the waka hourua Haunui, Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti and Tahitian va’a tipaerua Fa’afaite.

PRINCES WHARF:

Explore one of the world’s most accurate replicas – the HMB Endeavour – or board a gaff-rigged schooner – the R. Tucker Thompson – or imagine your next adventure sailing on the Spirit of New Zealand. Crew will host talks and activities.

  • Bookings to be made on the day, first in first served
  • Book and board Māori and Pacific waka from the Maritime Museum concourse 
  • Book and board European tall ships from Princes Wharf

Beneath the stunning Stardome, and with a large scale interactive star compass, learn more about the practice of celestial navigation - the art and science of finding your way by the sun, moon, stars, and planets.
Join the crews of Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti, Fa’afaite and Haunui waka as they bring to life Māori astronomy and the navigation techniques of the earliest Te Moananui a Kiwa voyagers.

FAQs Labour Weekend Activities

No high-heels
No toilet facilities on board 
Smoking and alcohol is not permitted at the port at any time. 
Please bring sunblock, sunhat and water.
All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Unfortunately, at present there is no wheel chair access onto the waka.
Lifejackets are provided and are to be worn by all public under 14

Visitors are strongly encouraged to use public transport for getting to and from the Tuia 250 ki Tāmaki Makaurau Labour Weekend. The Maritime Museum is a short walk from Britomart train station, bus depots and the Ferry Terminal. The Downtown Car Park is the closet public car parking space.

About the exhibition 

Tākiri: An Unfurling joins the ongoing dialogue around early encounters between Māori and Europeans in Aotearoa 250 years ago. Consider the impact through the work of seven contemporary artists, two curators and taonga of historic significance.
