Name/TitleMemorabilia: "Ship to shore" paper streamers
About this ObjectThis is a little packet of rolls of paper streamers.
Before it was possible and affordable to fly long distances, people travelled by ship. The journeys could be very long, and many were emigrating to another country – especially after the two world wars – so leaving was a big event.
When a ship was about to depart, streamers were thrown by the passengers on board to the people on the wharf watching them leave, who would catch the other end. The two ends were held on to until the streamers finally broke as the ship pulled away – a symbol of the parting of loved ones.
