Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum is pleased to announce that from Monday 5 July 2010 admission to Voyager will be free on an ongoing basis for residents of the Auckland region.
Voyager is proudly supported by the ratepayers of Auckland, and our free admission initiative continues our invitation to Aucklanders to discover how our maritime heritage has contributed to the development of Aotearoa. “Free admission recognises the ongoing support that Voyager receives from the residents of greater Auckland” said Voyager Trust Board Chair, Alastair Aitken. “Aotearoa’s rich maritime heritage makes Voyager a vitally important cultural institution and with the coming changes in Auckland’s governance we felt that this was an opportune time to deliver something of huge benefit to the ratepayers of our great city”.
Over the past twelve months Voyager has run periodic free entry for Aucklanders to test the viability of this model. These free entry periods resulted in significant increases in visitation numbers and overwhelmingly positive feedback.
On a personal note it has been incredibly heartening to see the demographic mix of our visitors change dramatically during these free entry periods. We are attracting new people to Voyager and they are passionately embracing our nation’s maritime heritage as shown in new exhibitions like Blue Water Black Magic – A Tribute to Sir Peter Blake.
This testing and feedback process has allowed us to determine that free entry for Aucklanders is a viable long term proposition that will be warmly welcomed by our community.
