Photographic images offer a direct testimony and understanding of the lives of European settlers in the Auckland province.  Some show immigrant ships disembarking people on Princes Wharf or cargo ships in the early 20th century from the Auckland Harbour Board files; small settlements along the Kaipara Harbour and the day to day lives of early families; photos of 19th century steam ships which connected townships on our coasts and rivers; while the Bailey and Lowe albums offer an insight into the early boat building industry of Auckland.

With over 400,000 photographs in our collection we have selected image collections based on their advanced state of degradation, fragility and worth as a unique documentary record of Auckland’s social maritime history.

The Library needs help from Voyager supporters. We have made a submission to DigitalNZ's Make it Digital website proposing the digitization of some of our historic maritime photographs. Kate Ambury (see blog post on Kate) has found many exciting photographs in the Bill Laxon Collection and we have several other photograph collections where digitization will safeguard the collection and enable users to view our images on our website.

We would like Voyager supporters to go to the Make it Digital website where they can read our proposal and vote for it. There is an award of $10,000.00 available for the project and there will be some weight given to the number of website votes for each application. The voting deadline is 5 March 2010.

Here is a selection of photographs from our collection, illustrating the type of images we would like to preserve through digitization. Click on each image thumbnail to view a larger version:
