Changes to the Museum Library, Archives and Collections 2016-2017

Some exciting changes are happening to the Library and Collections areas. It has taken 13 years and four different plans to finally make everything happen. The funding came from an Investment Partnership Agreement with Regional Facilities Auckland and the New Zealand Maritime Museum.

Out of the Box: RMS QUEEN MARY and her New Zealand Connection

At the time of her launch, RMS QUEEN MARY was the gem of the Cunard Line and the largest and fastest ship to be constructed in the UK since the 1920s depression. Aucklander, Ivy Pellow, first saw QUEEN MARY berthed at Southampton in 1936 and undergoing finishing touches before her maiden voyage. A stewardess on BERENGARIA, Ivy next saw QUEEN MARY bound for the UK in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Four years later, she became a stewardess for first class passengers on QUEEN MARY.

Shaw Savill and Albion - one company, hundreds of voyages and thousands of emigrants to New Zealand 

April – June 2016

Patrick Henderson’s Albion Line of Glasgow was the first UK shipping line to establish an emigration service to New Zealand. The Albion Line had a reputation for consideration of the welfare and comfort of the emigrants, while on board their ships.

Bean Rock Lighthouse: how she was saved, restored and replaced.

Bean Rock Lighthouse is New Zealand’s oldest wooden lighthouse and also the sole surviving example of a sea-washed tower in New Zealand.

The lighthouse’s important role as a navigational beacon began after construction of distinctive hexagonal design was completed and the lamp was officially lit at 6.00 pm on 24 July 1871.

Take a nostalgic look at some of the advertisements used to advertise beach and swimwear fashions.  For decades adverts in boating and yachting magazines have encouraged readers to purchase the latest fashions to wear at the beach.

How did this photograph, which belonged to an Australian soldier arrive in New Zealand?

In May 2014, the New Zealand Maritime Museum was gifted a photograph of R.M.S. NIAGARA that had been presented to 2nd Lieutenant A.B. Wadsworth in recognition of his service on the voyage from  Sydney to Vancouver, March- May 1919. The photograph is signed by a number passengers on the voyage. The photograph has travelled thousands of kilometres to arrive in NZ.

600 ton slipway still in use after 100 years

The year 2015 marks a centenary event for Auckland of the maritime kind. The 600 ton slipway in Westhaven was built by the Auckland Harbour Board to provide a maintenance access service for vessels up to 600 tons in displacement. The slipway was built to handle vessels up to 58 metres long and during her working life has seen a large variety of vessels.

Memories from the past.

Museum collections are made up of many items and sometimes we find an item which in itself has a significant story to tell. Here are four stories from our ANZAC history.

Ruahine Passengers

Frank Baldwin was an avid collector of maritime books, photographs and postcards.

Amongst his collection is a photograph of RMS RUAHINE taken in Wellington just prior to the start of World War I.
