Become a volunteer
We have space in our volunteer team for you, if you find you have some free time during the week.
Are you able to communicate clearly in a friendly way? Can you work by yourself – with confidence and enthusiasm?
Are you able to volunteer at least three hours per week/fortnight?
If your answer is ‘yes’ to all of the above we are looking for YOU as a volunteer.
We’ll do all the rest…..
We’ll introduce you to the Maritime Museum and then you can share what you find with our visitors
Our passionate and enthusiastic volunteers play an incredibly important part in the operation of the museum. They bring the experience to life for visitors, sail and maintain the fleet of heritage vessels, and promote the museum and New Zealand's maritime history in their communities.
In return, volunteers have the satisfaction of making an enjoyable and rewarding contribution to the museum, as well as learning new skills and meeting new people along the way.
We currently have more than 150 volunteers working in all sorts of areas, including:
- Heritage vessel crew
- Tour guides
- Visitor hosts
- Heritage vessel maintenance crew
- Steam engineers
- Model makers
New volunteers welcome!
We are always looking for new volunteers and the amount of time you can offer is up to you. All we ask is that you commit to a minimum of one day a fortnight. You don't need any special skills to volunteer except a willingness to learn and an enjoyment of working with other people: we provide the training you need. We also welcome people who have special skills areas like engineering, sailing and boat maintenance.
Our volunteers include women and men of all ages (from students to retirees) who enjoy working and socialising together, and the satisfaction of offering a memorable experience to visitors from all over the world. Volunteers often work closely with Museum staff and their support is greatly appreciated.
Join the museum as a volunteer and you'll be included in a monthly roster so you know your responsibilities ahead of time. You can also look forward to social events including BBQs, sailing trips and the annual Christmas party.
Ready to volunteer? Simply download the volunteer flier and application form to find out more about the opportunities on offer and complete the form to register your interest. You can print the form and hand it in at the Museum shop, or email your completed pdf to email@example.com
